Imagine finding these gems of the Indian Ocean for the first time? No humans – just flora and fauna. Whilst the Arab traders were probably the first to visit the uninhabited Seychelles, the first recorded sighting took place in 1505 by the Portuguese. Since this became a transit point for trading between Africa and Asia, pirates occasionally used the island until of course, the French took control of the islands. In 1756, they were named after Jean Moreau de Sechelles, after the then French finance minister.
The entire island is only 17 miles long and a few miles wide, and among some of the most picturesque beaches you’ll find, Mahe reigns supreme in pristine beaches. How is this for picturesque – a small mountain chain running down the centre of Mahe, the land flattening out as it reaches the shoreline. On the flat ring around Mahe, is where you’ll find the main road running and connecting towns and villages all around.
Sitting northwest you’ll find Beau Vallon, this was the main beach in the Seychelles for many years until tourists started taking a greater interest and it then became easier to get to the nearby smaller islands. Because Beau Vallon is not as busy as it once was, if you’re choosing Seychelles as your holiday destination, grab your snorkel and be sure to head here first!
Other beaches on the list to visit whilst you’re vacationing in the Seychelles, begin with Anse Source d’Argent. This has got to be the second best beach as well as one of the most popular. With a coastline with a series of small crescent pink sand beaches, separated by gigantic granite boulders, infamous for their unusual curves, worn by time and weather, and the beach, sheltered by a reef which makes it absolutely ideal for snorkelling and sun bathing, and the very calm waters making it perfect for little ones, we forewarn you that it’s hard to tear yourself away! Explore the coastline for hours on end.
Why not pay a visit to Anse a la Mouche, situated on the south-western coast. You’ll find a large, sparkling calm bay with shallow, clear waters – making swimming very safe and perfect for children, because the water remains shallow, even at high tide with no strong currents.
Other beaches you can find are Ansa Le Reunion, which lies along its shore on The La Digue Island. You’ll find Anse Patates on the northern most tip of the La Digue Island, and it’s close to the Patatran Village. Set above the small, white beach of Anse Patate, this hotel provides some of the best views! Built on the hillside, overlooks the beach and each verandah gives panoramic views of clear sea and neighbouring islands. It’s backdrop is set in lush, tropical gardens and with 20 spacious, air-conditioned bungalows, with ceiling fans, mini-bars, phone and shower and a private terrace sea view, you don’t want to stay anywhere else on this island but here!
So when planning your next family vacation – think about those crystal clear beaches, the calm waters and the shorelines that will have you strolling forever, letting time pass you by without a care in the world.

You’re planning a holiday to the Seychelles? You don’t know just how lucky you are! Mother Nature was extremely generous with these islands, and spoiled them rotten! It is without any doubt that the beaches are the big attraction, and just what beaches they are – with exquisite ribbons of white sand, lapped by topaz waters and backed by lush hills with big glacis boulders. Imagine the sight!
With this dreamlike setting, the Seychelles are unsurprisingly the place of choice for any honeymoon. For those holiday makers who are looking for more than simply cracking open that bottle of champagne with a loved one, Seychelles has earned a reputation as a paradigm of ecotourism, being a top spot to watch birds and giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Not to mention the vast living world lying below the turquoise waters, beckoning divers of every level. If you tire of the beaches, venture on land on one of the many jungle trails, indulge in fine dining, or relax with the laid-back tempo.
This paradise is accessible to all, so why keep it quiet? Not only does this island offer luxurious options, but it also has plenty of quaint, affordable self-catering options and guesthouses, often situated on some of the best land. It remains an expensive destination, as its tourist authorities are now targeting non-millionaires. A mass tourism it will never be, so don’t fear!
Are you seduced yet? If not, take into consideration that Seychelles is one of the world’s very last frontiers, promising adventure and breathtaking natural beauty, set in pristine surrounds, untouched by man. The climate is always warm, without extremes. Temperatures in this tropical haven seldom drop below 24 degrees Celsius, or rise above 32 degrees Celsius. Only the remotest southern islands lie comfortably outside the cyclone belt making Seychelles’ a year round destination for those sun worshippers and beach lovers.
Between the months of October and March, the north-west trade winds that visit allow the sea to generally remain calm and the weather warm and humid. In January and February, the island receives their life-giving rains, which rejuvenate the rivers and streams and tease the vibrant foliage into rainbows of colour. Between the months of May and September bring drier, cooler weather, with livelier seas.
Mahe, one of the islands of the group, possesses white sandy beaches, flats of coral and shell known locally as plateaus, and have small streams descending the mountain slopes deposit alluvial material, which creates the most fertile soils on the island. If, the Indian Ocean is indeed the deep blue ruler of the world’s most beautiful islands, then the Seychelles are the brightest and most expensive emeralds in its crown. Discreetly hidden from the modern world, the 115 islands making up the Seychelles, lie strewn across the warm Indian Ocean, in a scattered pattern of brilliant green and white.
